{{what books would an "experienced" Pw'er recommend for us "new-to-the hobby" types read to learn about the basics of transmissions, transfer cases, engines, and so forth?}}

Let's try this again. I posted once but it didn't take. I would see if I could score an original factory repair manual. You might find one at a swap meet or at a used book store. Motors Truck repair manuals are also good. I've got several that I got in a swap several years ago. They are pretty good. In addition, most of the troubleshooting manuals are good from the era of about 1910 to 1940. One name to look for is Audell. I've got a book called "Audells answers for the automobilist" which was printed about 1912. Many of the procedures are way out of date such as grinding valves and removing carbon every 100-400 miles.

Chiltons were good until the early 60's then they went to pot. I heard they were bought out by a competitor to get their earlier titles. By the 70's they were very inaccurate and assumed you knew a lot more than you did. It got to where I didn't read them as I never knew if the information was accurate.
