Putting a 12 volt alternator on a WC or PW

A while ago (2-3 mos.) I installed a 3 wire alternator on my WC for the simple fact that it came with a 12 volt gen. originally and the price of the alt was 1/2 that of a rebuild on the generator. Anyway I used the original brackett on bottom to mount and a longer one off a 350 or something on top. To make a long story short it worked up untill last week. I noticed a heck of a vibration as I had the alt. mounted on front of the lower mount instead of inside the two ears as the generator is mounted. The alt. vibrated so bed that it finally only was putting out only 10 volts. Luckily I am a regular at NAPA (who on this forum is'nt?) and they gave me a new one no charge.

To fix the mounting problem I took the bottom brackett off and cut the ears with a cut-off wheel. I then swapped them front to rear, front on back, back on front, welding them with a wire feed welder. It's a light fabrication job that's fairly easy and now I can put the alt. in between the ears as it should go and theres no vibration. I used a long threaded bolt putting a nut and washer right on the back part of the alt. to maintain tension, then another on the back of the back ear of the brackett for even more strength. I maintained the use of the long top adjusting arm from the 350. So far it works great! I retained all the original parts for possible use in the future. Hope this helps
