sounds like you need to adjust your brake pedal push rod a bit so it is not putting pressure on the master cylinder which is causing the brake lights to stay on.
Yes you are correct the red wire is always hot. Becareful when disconnecting I advise unhooking the battery as sparks will fly if touched to the frame or anything else.
Has same probs on dads 58 sweptside and it cleared it up.
