Both the threaded rod and the top plate gauge the distance between both halfs and also control penetration depth of the shfit dogs.
The following link is a direct URL to my Image Event Site LU-4 Winch rebuild. My winch had the same problem, that being the wrong spacing between both halfs of the cases. Someone in the past put a Spacer in the wrong location causing the case halfs to be spread further apart than designed. To over come this problem, they made a new top plate that would accept the extra new distance to to the assembly fault. You will see this in the pictures.
