replace the rear main on my 49 PW?

I have the seal and gaskets for the oilpan, and a nice warm shop to keep me out of the rain today.

Do I need to seperate the enging and transmission to access the top half of the rear main seal?

Any other common tips/ tricks to making this a painless operation?
