Was this the same starter w/ a new nose? Than maybe it's a bendix problem...but usually if a bendix sticks engaged it just runs/grinds, and maybe centrifugal force wrecks the starter. Without severe damage to teeth on the ring gear. Ring gears come off by heating with an acetylene torch, and can be rotated to get new teeth to the wear zone- rotate 60 degrees for a 6 cyl, 45 deg for a v8. Depending on access, maybe you can do the rotation without even pulling the tranny. But you might be able to find a complete flywheel easier....

The WC 1/2tons had the push pedal pinned to the starter, and if body twist was severe, the starter would stick. If the overrunning clutch in the bendix was bad too, you could spin up the starter to 30,000 rpms- engine speed times 14:1 ratio between starter and ring gear. Later models have just a 'head' on the push pedal, eliminating that problem.
