I just noticed the other day that big rigs don't have any safety chains on 5th wheels, but they do on pintles. I'd say you have agood plan w/ the D-rings, keep the local Mounties happy.
I too left my pinly unlatched once, only turning things around in my driveway. I though about skipping the chains that day, then said to myself "where else to hook them that they won't drag?"
