It is big enuff. The 390 will pull it fine. BUT, these trucks setup like what you describe get around 9 MPG empty and will probably get 7 MPG full. I used to have a '68 F-350 with a 390 4 speed. By the way, this truck you want should have a Dana 60 rear if stock, or a Dana 70 be it a 1 ton rear. From the pic, the truck looks quite sturdy and worth the price if thats what you like. I know where there is a similar truck optioned like you mention that is slightly nicer that he wants $2500 for it. Personally, Id opt for a 1970 Dodge W-200 or D-200 Camper Special. Those are harder to find than the Fords of that era tho.

As for the F-100 with origional running gear and high miles, Does that have a 300 six in it? Those big Ford Six engines are the only Ford engines I have ever had that actually was worth a darn.

Dodge Content: If I could find a 1970 Dodge 3/4 ton that was as clean looking as this Ford you are looking at, for the same price and close to home, Id buy it, and drive and drive it....and love it! I miss not having a Sweptline around... Good luck on what you do and enjoy the truck if you get it, even tho it aint a Dodge.
