The valves in the wide block are in a canted configuration where the new style is not. Because of this, the cam shafts are different than the new style 318. The intake and exhaust manifolds are different as well. The wide block was manufactured from 1956-1966. It is part of the 277,301,303,313 and 326 engine family. All 318s from 1967-1992 are generally considered the new style or LA engine.
