I don't think newer latches would be that much more secure.
Actually, the best latch they ever had on this cab was the 1939 latch which was more like a house door setup - I think the 1940-up latch was a much cheaper version and more flimsy.
Unfortunately the 39 latch had it's own door and jamb sections and would be just as difficult to swap.
