I know this may sound like a stupid idea, but if he broke them then he should plate them for free. Could you somhow bond (glue) the pieces back together and have them plated and hide the joint? If you can get him to own up to his mistake and do it for free, it could be worth a try before paying for a new one. Or at least you might end up with a halfway decent spare.
