You can also buy 12 volt coils with an internal ballast resistor. You simply hook up the 12 volts from the key switch to the coil terminal.
The ballast resistor is internal and hooked up to do its thing transparently. I have one on the Bumblebee and my Bombardier with a 251 engine. Got them from NAPA. Just tell them you want a 12 volt coil with an internal ballast resistor. Right on the side of the coil in large words. "Do not use external ballast resistor".
