Stuck distributors are not so much a problem here in So. Calif. as in salted road areas. The salt corrodes the aluminum on later (post 1960?) engines. Not so big of a problem earlier, cast is more rust resistant. But I did see a car in San Diego in 1980 that had a stuck distributor in New Jersy. The mechanic with a slide hammer had broken the dist body. The owner drove across the country with the upper part wired to the coil to maintain timing. Critical timing? NOT, for New Jersy-ites.
