8 volt battery in 6 volt ffpw

is the coil in the 6 volt power wagon supposed to get warm. i put a 8 volt battery and new 6 volt coil in my 52 ffpw and got it to run for about ten minutes then it quit no spark. i felt the coil and it was warm is this normal. will running a 8 volt battery hurt the coil. thanks for any help. dave
