What I have seen done, but never tried myself, is to make an arched flange that bolts to the fenderwell of the first series box. Then, you can bolt the later fenders to this flange. No modifications needed to what are still relatively rare fenders, or to the pickup box. If you don't like the results, or you later find the correct first series fenders, you have not modified anything beyond repair and can easily swap everything out for the correct parts.

I would probably go about making a flange by finding some used lengths of thin L-Angle, like what you might find used in a bed frame. Notch one leg of the L every inch or so. Bend it to fit the radius of your fender well, bolt in place, and tack weld the notches to create the proper arched shape. Finish welding the notches closed and bolt the newer fenders to the vertical leg of this L-angle. If you like what you have after practicing, you can then use heavier L-angle or formed angle to make a more permanent mount.
