The center bolt of the spring pack goes into a recess in the spring mount, and keeps axle from shifting if u-bolts loosen. 2x2x 1/4 square tube would work, but you need hole and lug. My nephew didn't, and totaled his blazer when the front axle shifted. Center bolts are hardened too, don't use just any bolt for a replacement. Dormans (or whoever they became) has them.
