Marty and I have been around and around on this subject before. (He is bing obstinate!) ;^)

It all make perfect sense to me. My W-series lubrication poster calls for this same "s
Semi-Fluid Chassis Lubricant" in all of the u-joints and the steering knuckles. It is grease, but not wheel bearing grease, which is thicker and sometimes comes fibered. You are correct that the fitting is located where it is in order to lubricate the upper bearing cone. Also, since Semi-Fluid Chassis Lubricant is thicker than 90 or 140W gear lube, the level plug has to be near the bottom. As you pump through a grease gun (which is exactly what is shown in the pictures) in the fitting, it will slowly fill from the top to the bottom untill it appears at the level plug. If one were to mistakenly fill with gear lube, the cavity would fill from the bottom up and would not fill the steering knuckle enough. Also, there is no oil seal between the cavity and the wheel bearing. Gear luby in the steering knuckles quickly works its way into the wheel bearings and dilutes the wheel bearing grease, which is a very bad thing.

That grease gun was supplied with the trucks and is correct.

Clint
