The 'mecanical' water temp gauge is filled with Ether, and is repairable- you need to buy a new gauge to get a bulb full of ether. Freeze the bulb, then cut the gauge off and solder to the old gauge. I used a crimp on butt connector too- remove the plastic, and don't crimp, just solder. It was an excellent pre-tinned splice. See the link in the posting below, by George. It worked for me. Cost about $20.
