They've been testing different methods to control sandblasting waste in Shipyards for longer than I've been alive & no method has ever been found that will work...everything from tarping to screening...there is no way to screen the paint since the barge rolls on tracks back into the water when being undocked...all the wasted paint floats away.
The only way to control the waste is by controlling what makes up the paint that we spray on these barges. In Canada you can't by anti-fouling paints with copper or arsenic in them because they've proven to be horrific for marine life. In the US they are still sold & used by the US Navy to curb marine growth because it's been proven to work best.
All this is a little off topic...I don't make the rules, I only follow them & believe me...both Fisheries & WCB frequent this place on almost a daily basis & we have never been fined for our sandblasting practice & believe me...there is far worse things blasted off these barges than a little enamel off a Power Wagon frame!
