Winching question

I'm sure this question is answered in the PW Operators manual available from VPW which I don't have. And it's kind of a spin-off from an earlier post below.
My winch PTO is trans mounted. What would be the proper operation?
ie, could you/should you shift the truck into gear to assist the winch in self-recovery? Or does it have to be kept in nuetral?? (I know there's many other uses where the truck winch is used with the truck in nuetral).
