Ok, my 74-77 parts books says 0609 should be the numbers from the 10,000 day calender.

My 1977 service manual claims the number should be month and day, so June 9th in this case.

The owners manual also shows a letter after the displacement, but does not say there is one for sure if the engine is standard.

I am a little bit unsure here, as the books do not agree, but I think the issue is that the one book covers many years, and gives the explination for the earlier trucks. My 74-75 book has almost exactly the same page as the 74-77 book, so maybe things changed in 1976 or 1977, but the book was not updated.
