While Moly is good for cam/lifters, I don't use thick stuff on the bearings. I feel it might slow down the initial oil flow.

Early in my carreer the machine shop loaded the wrong rings.It was the only time I got pistons with rings loaded and a disposable compression strap around each one. After running it in the shop for an hour, we had to dissassemble it due to smoke and low compression. We had lubed it with Lubriplate, the white grease, per my mentor. All the bearings in that re-sleeved Vega motor were burned blue. Since that time I just use a couple quarts of oil as I assemble, then prime the pump as you did. Just my opinion, I hope you can find a definitive problem.
