I would try to stay with the 230. This is a fairly common engine. You may even be able to get a freshly rebuilt one. You don't say where you are located but I could probably be able to score one from a salvage yard locally. Dodge cars, as well as trucks used this motor up until about 1960. PWs got the longer 251 in '59 or so and the cars went with the slant 6 in '60. You could probably even use a 217 out of a much earlier car but it wouldn't be as powerful.


You really want a truck engine as they used heavier parts and had sodium filled valves which are resistant to valve seat recession from unleaded gas.
