Gordon, ~~~ Only comment I can make is that in the 40's & 50's frequently new replacement blocks were used that had no identification on the I.D. boss. I currently have a 1948 GMC single axle dump truck with a "new" engine. The block is unmarked indicating it was one of those replacements - Don't know if it is 248, 270, or 301. Reportedly the castings were heavy enough to be bored to the size of what was being replaced. Dodge had the 218 and then the 230 ???? Still a mystery. BOB
