There will be quite a bit of driveline rotation with a lock-rite. This is completely different than gear backlash and does not make any difference what your gear ratio is. There has to be play in a locker because if there wasn't, it would be constantly locking and unlocking with just slight variations in wheel speed. In a lock-rite, the play is between the pinion pin in the carrier and the center lock-rite driver, not the lock-rite teeth. In a Detroit locker (not ez locker) the play is between the teeth.

You also might have excessive backlash, but thats not related to the play in the locker. I have had a lock-rite in my Jeep for years, and 45 degrees doesn't sound abnormal.
