DAvid,
I chose to use a chev motor because of the wide availability of parts and options. I felt the bellhousing/transmission choices were more flexible than going with other makes. The engine I'm using came out of a large truck. I felt the added strength of 4-bolt main bearings would make a reliable engine. As far as engine accessories,I believe chev has the edge in that they haven't changed basic design since 1955. The smallblock 265,283,302,307,327,350,400 all share the same block. With all these years of building on the same design, I believed the chev power plant to be my best choice (that and the fact my wife hates the smell of diesel).I have had good luck with chev motors in the past and am familiar with them which is mainly why I chose to go with GM.
As far as the wheelwell lights, dingle balls and other accessories you mention, my goal is to keep the truck looking stock on the outside while maintaining the performance and safety of a modern vehicle. Power steering, 4-wheel assisted disc brakes, lockers, hydraulic winch and air conditioning are my goals for modern options. Dan
