I happen to be an electrical engineer, and far from "setting upon you",
you have it right on. The resistor you are describing is probably a "50 watt"
unit, which corresponds to about 8 amps at 6 volts. Since the blower probably
only draws half that current, the resistor only gets moderately warm. Unlike
trucks which can always carry alot more than their "ton" rating, resistors
really shouldn't be used anywhere near their max wattage rating.

One way to keep the resistor cooler and the cab a little warmer is to mount it
inside one of the air ducts. I've seen this in several factory heaters for the
low-speed resistors.
