I had concerns as to grinding the end. Not so much for the concern of where the interference actually was happening, like you stated, Ken, but more from the stand point of metalurgical alteration of the hardness of the shaft.

I dont know enough about the temper/strength/hardening or whatever these shafts were origianly created to, but, adding heat by grinding could very well have changed these characteristics enough to cause a break or failure somewhere at a later date. (usually right in the middle of a mud hole)

Maybe it wouldnt have, but why chance it.

So, instead, I bought some oil resistant gasket material, 1/16" thick, and using the metal flanged axle/hub seal as a guide, I made myself a number of gaskets...

3 to be exact per side.

It worked out very well.. No more binding...

And I didnt alter the hardness or strength of the original shaft in any way..
