If the onboard computer can write data into its memory, there will always be a way somebody can deliberately write different data into its memory. Once the data's changed, nobody will ever be able to tell it was tampered with. If a lot of people start reprogramming their vehicle computers, there will be an escalating level of encryption, firewalls, and maybe realtime GPS-based tracking uploaded to some central location. On-Star could already do that if they wanted to (Do we know they don't?). What will be next, refusing to insure old vehicles that don't have remote tracking/control boxes?
