The old Carter fuel filter, shown in the image above, has an internal ceramic filter element. It can be seen in the photo as a light tan colored part inside the sediment bowl. If you find one of these original type filters, make sure it has this element, or installing a modern inline filter, in place of the old assembly, will work also. Don't rely upon the sediment bowl on the fuel pump to filter the gas. It is not designed to be a fuel filter. It only captures some of the bigger "chunks" and keeps them from passing by the diaphram and valves in the pump. Smaller particles can still make it to the carburetor without a true filter.

The carbureter shown to the left in the image above also has a filter, but it is integral to the carbureter. These carbureters (ET1, ET2, and ET4) were correct for the earlier WDX model POWER-WAGONS. The filter in these consist of an element constructed of a stack of brass plates that tighten together tight enough to theoretically allow passage of fuel but not contaminants.
