If the pedal moves 6 inches, and the throwout bearing moves 1/2 inch, the leverage is 12 to one. If you push with 100#, that's 1200 pounds of pressure against the thrust bearing. If tranny line pressure is 50psi, and the torque converter center shaft is 2 inches across, then thats only about 150 pounds of thrust. And converters have no restriction to flow- the outlet is to the cooler, with minimum pressure build up in the convertor, unless something is plugged up. Or the tranny relieve valve is clogged. But since the converter usually has 1/8 to 1/4 end play, pressure is not likely a problem. If the crank is moving fore and aft by 1/16, you have a bad thrust bearing, which could account for the knocking noise. The crank is the one for an auto, isn't it? Converter has to fit crank...Time to tear it down.
