I use my truck for off road trips sometimes. In 20 years of offroading with many types of rigs is the dana axles get hung up on roots, rocks, thick mud, and pieces of Fords that are buried in the mire. The shape of stock axle housings allow you to slip over and through stuff with greater ease. Another issue is steering linkage, when mounted in the front of the axle, in can easily get bent. (which i have done) I have never bent a Tie rod on a stock FF. Also the exposed ujoint in the knuckle, and the inner axle seals get full of dirt and fail. closed knuckle set ups do not have these problems.
