I was told if I did not Copyright material I had written, or images I had taken that anyone could use them without my being able to do anything about it.
Case in point, my websites:

I have had people take whole pages and use them on their site, claiming the work as their own! While it is not worth my time or effort to stop them, I figured as I had not Copyrighted it by filling out the offical form, and paying the fee I was out of luck.
As for Chris's problem, I think the only person entitled to any payment is the taker of the picture, as I do not think it is like a picture of a person where you need to get a release from the model.
I am eager to hear more info, as the whole internet permissions thing is a bit unclear to me.
