The engine was originally designed by Onan to be used in a variety of applications. At the time that it was designed and went into production, Onan was the largest builder of diesel engines under 50 horsepower in the world. The engine was desiginated by Onan as their "L" series. It was made in 3, 4, and 6 cylinder versions. Although one of its main uses was in generator sets which ran at 1800 rpm, the engineers at Onan designed it to run at 3600 rpm with no loss of longivety. They carefully considered all aspects of the design to make sure that it would be a strong performer at 3600 rpm. I was fortunate to know many of the fine engineers at Onan who were on the design team. They were excellent engineers who took great pride in their work. Onan built a new manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama to produce these engines. When Cummins aquired the Onan Corporation, the engine was desiginated the "A" engine.
