What a day sure glad these trucks are easy to work on. Stopped by the auto parts store to pay for a part I got befor. Left the truck running went in paid came out and the truck had stalled? Could not restart it? Did some trouble shooting and found out the mechanical fuel pump had quit and wasn't pumping any more. This was a pretty new pump to! So bought a 2-4 lb 12v electric and plumbed it in real quick and it started right off. When down the road and noticed the govenor was slowing the truck down, all the way to -10 mph! Stopped at the tire shop and borrowed a few tools and tried to adjust the govenor. No luck and the throttle would not even do anything! Took the cover off and the spring and chain had fell off or broke? Took a while but if you take the throttle cam on the cover and put it on the other side of the lever that works the butterfy in the carb it will turn it about 3/4 of the way but you can only use one screw to hold the cover on. Now I was able to work the throttle direct with out the spring and chain and be on my way. I could get up to 50+ mph on the flats but pulling my steep hill 30 mph was all I could do because I could not open it up all the way. I am real tired of having a govenor telling my carb what to do. I know when to let off and not over rev the engine with the gas pedal. So by looking at the mechanism I should be able to put the cam on the other side, eliminate the spring and chain. Since the vacume shoves on the linkage it dose not need to be hooked to it. I am going to re posision the cam on the linkage so it will open it up all the way. There is a flat spot stoping you from doing this but it looks like I can drill out the flat spot and use a pin thru the rod instead after I re/set it and tighten the bolt on the lever. This is to keep the lever from turning if it gets loose. I don't want to change carbs because I like the one I have, just eliminating the govenor. Was told you can't remove the govenor but have figured a way not in the books to over ride it and will let you know how it works out. It sure got me home that way just not able to open the throttle all the way. On the way to town I was cruising at 55+ MPH too and said boy the Govenor is working great today. Knew saying that something would go wrong never fails! Mark H.
