It sounds like the wires...the easiest thing to do is replce them! You can tell by testing at night run engine and put under load and look for arcing or corona arcing on the wire.
The only other thing it may be is the most infamous problem with the older AC 4 cyls is valves..did you check the compression? If you have none, the spark isn't necessary anyway! John
