My limited experience with walnuts is that they exude some substance from their leaves that poisons any other plant growing under them. Do the locusts survive being planted under or very close to walnuts. Alders also put nitrate in the soil. They have nodules on the roots like beans and are usually the first tree to grow on gravel bars, abandoned roads and bare mineral soil on the wet side of the mountains. Don't know if they grow back east.
