I'm no forester but we have a lot of them as well. We have about 2 that have reached about 18 inches in diameter but normally they die off at 14 or less. Don't know if it's a disease or what. If you cut them while they are still alive they will last a long time outdoors for fence posts and such but tough to nail in to. If dead when cut they are firewwood only and rot fairly quickly. Good BTU when burning as well. Hope this helps and others will chime in. Kevin
