Thimble?

There's no reason you couldn't put a thimble in it, especially with a crimped sleeve that can tighten it up around the thimble, but I see a lot of industrial slings these days made up without thimbles. The thimbles tend to be kind of tight for slipping things through other than the point of a hook. I suspect the pros just make sure the whole setup is oversize enough that they don't need whatever added strength or wear resistance the thimble provides. Obviously the cable will take a permanent set if a load is put on it in a plain loop, but that doesn't matter since you're not going to be trying to straighten it out anyway. My main use of a loop is as a choker, so I'd rather have a larger loop that I can slip another looped end or any large hook through. Also in the case of an emergency repair in the field where you don't have any crosby clips handy, you probably won't have a thimble either.
