Dave,

Since the rest of my truck is already 12V, the only thing that wasn't was the fuel gauge and sender. I put the resistor on a dash brace (thought it might be a good heat sink). Input from fuse panel and output to gauge. Gauge then feeds the sender as I recall. You may need to feed from the ignition switch if you're going with original wiring. My wiring is a little unique as my fuse panel is switched, I have dual batteries with an isolator, and a few other mods. Consequently I don't feed anything directly from the ignition switch in order to keep the load off the ignition switch was not designed to handle significant loads on these old trucks.
