Yes, if I remember right, the groove does have a hole drilled in it. And yes, it would be very easy to install the plunger backwards. From what I remember, the spring fits into the hollow end of the plunger, as you stated. I referred to all of the manuals I have to make sure I installed it in the correct direction. So then the only things I can think of are an incorrect plunger (relief valve) or an incorrect spring (too short). I'll be tinkering with this again in a few days when I have more time. Just for the heck of it, though, I might try installing the plunger opposite to the way it's intalled currenty and see what happens.
