front axles

I am rebuilding my front axle assemblies and have removed both driveshafts. The manual shows a phantom picture of the u-joint male and female orientations. Next page in the manual shows something completely different. It appears that the male and female lugs can be reversed in the housings. Can someone tell me which is the correct way to assemble the couplings?
