Hobart and Miller have merged, so there are few differences between the two now. Both are excellent machines. In researching the same question for the last several years the pros all say the same thing: buy the highest capacity welder you can afford.

A 110 volt is challenged at anything much over 1/8 inch, at least regarding duty cycle. A 220 single phase 175 amp mig has far greater abilities and higher duty cycle, meaning it can run at higher amps for a longer period of time before the thermal relay shuts it off. If you can force a Miller 210 out of the piggy bank you'll never regret it. You can weld most anything with a 175, but a 210 has much greater duty cycle and welds heavier metal in a single pass. 175 or 210 amp MIGs, from Miller, Hobart or Lincoln, will most likely be able to handle any job you throw at them.

Again and again I have read laments from guys who bought el cheapo bargain deal units from wannabe manufacturers and it's only bad news. Stick with the big 3 and you're better off for power, reliability, parts, service and bang for your buck. My next purchase will be the Miller 175 for general purpose welding and fabrication, unless I can afford the 210.
