Head gasket - to seal or not to seal. That is the Question

Just got a new head gasket from NAPA (copper laminated with paper). Shop manual says no sealer. Don Bunn and Chilton say sealer. Should I apply sealer, and if so what type? How about spray copper? Thanks.
