Sectioning sidewalls...

I got a set of 12.00-20 Michelin XML tires (44.5" tall!) All the tires are a minimum of 95% wear and one like new. one has a puncture through the sidewall the size of a 16 nail. another one has a 1/2" avulsion in the sidewall. Is there anyway to repair these besides putting a patch on the inside of the tire? I've heard about "sectioning" but dont know exactly what it is. These are Radial tires.
