I have been working with a fellow named Rawhide Johnson, he is recognized as the top restorer of wagons and coachs in the western US. Some of his large collection is housed at the Cody WYO museum and working on getting one at West Yellowstone MT. Anyway, in restoreing the wood on wagons, a mix of about 20% paint and 80% linseed oil is used for the finish of the wagon. The State of Idaho had a WWI wagon in their collection, but you could see that it was coated with straight paint. The linseed oil allows the paint to penetrate the wood and gives it more of a transparent finish while penetrating and protecting the wood. I have never heard of useing linseed oil as a finish on metal. Tom
