I do not believe that inspections do much good. I live in a state that does not have them. I have also lived where they are required. The cars here are in generally much better shape in this state. I kind of view inspections as a way for the state to take money from you with little return value and provide a way for a selected business to have a captive clientele. In this state the cops will pull you over if they feel that you have defective equipment. This is especially true for large trucks as they can do a lot of damage if there is a mechanical failure. They (State Patrol) have roving units that specifically check trucks for weight and mechanical issues. They do catch a lot of older truck owned by smaller firms with brakes that out of spec. Mechanical failures do not seem to be the source of accidents it is mostly the loose nut behind the wheel that is the cause.
