I've heard that in states without inspections, less than 2% of accidents involve mechanical problems. I'd say inpections are useless, but I don't know what percent of accidents in states with inspections are mechanical, or fatal/ injury accidents. I would guess that inspections are forced on owners by garage associations, not the NTSB. Insurance companys don't even require them. My guess is drivers use more caution in older vehicles, it's the unsafe driver that causes almost all accidents.
