Braden indicates in their yearly maintenance proceedures "Note: It is normal to see a small amount of fine bronze particles in the drain oil. If large flakes or chips are present, the winch should be dissassembled and the worm gear set inspected." Page 27, Item B.

So just because you see bronze in the drail oil, don't be too alarmed. Its an indicator, but its also normal and expected.

For additional info they say "As a worm gear winch operates, the steel worm will burnish a unique wear pattern onto the aluminum-bronze alloy worm gear. For this reason, we recommend that a worm gear should not be replaced without also replacing the steel worm. A proper 'break in' of a new winch or a repaired winch with a new worm gear set, is needed to produce a gear wear pattern which will maximize component life...."

Im assuming that the drum is spining with the drum shaft. If the drum is spinning on the drum shaft, either your dog is rounded over, or the keys that the dog slides on are damaged.
