Is the drum just turning on the shaft, or is the shaft turning as well? If the drum is free wheeling on the shaft you probably just sheared the key. If so the clicking you hear would be on every revolution of the drum. You should be able to tell very quickly if the dogs are damaged just by looking at them if they are similar to the MU2 style.
